Public Utilities Board Elects Officers, Welcomes New Commissioner
At its regular meeting on July 16, the City of Alameda Public Utilities Board (PUB) elected its officers for the 2013 fiscal year. Mr. Gregory Hamm, Ph.D., P.E., was re-elected as president and Ms. Madeline Deaton was elected as vice president. The Board also elected Mr. Girish Balachandran, General Manager of the City of Alameda’s electric utility, Alameda Municipal Power, as its secretary.

Celebrating 125 Years of Community-Owned Electricity

There’s a book that sits on my desk titled Municipal Electric Light Plant, Alameda, California, Cash Book, 1908-1909. Every so often, I like to flip through the crisp, hand-written pages of the ledger, perusing the names of those long-ago Alamedans who visited the plant to pay their electric bills. But that book is more than century-old electric accounts. It’s a symbol of a 125-year-old community-owned electric company that is still providing power to new generations of some of those same Alameda families.

Public Utilities Board adopts 2013 budget
Last night the City of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board approved Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP) $57 million budget for fiscal year 2013. The budget reflects the priorities set by the Board through its adopted strategic plan, the annual planning workshop held in January 2012, and the annual budget workshop held in April 2012. The Board also approved a transfer of $2.8 million to the City of Alameda’s General Fund.

A power outage affecting a portion of South Shore Center occurred at 12:54 PM on Sunday afternoon. Eight customers were affected. Power to all customers was restored at 2:34 PM.

Get plugged in at Civic Center Garage
The City of Alameda and the Alameda Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new publicly accessible Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations on the first level of the Civic Center Garage, 1420 Oak Street. These charging stations were made possible through a grant awarded to Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) by the Department of Energy, as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).

AMP Awards Ice Cream Contest Winner
Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) presented the prize to the winner of its Name the Ice Cream Contest last Friday at Tucker's Ice Cream. Alameda resident Benjamin Gleitzman won for his entry titled “Marshmallow Megavolt.” The contest, sponsored by AMP and Tucker’s, challenged residents to come up with a unique and electrifying name for a new ice cream flavor commemorating AMP’s 125th anniversary.

AMP Urges Customers To Be Aware of Utility Bill Scams
Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is alerting customers to be aware of a scam that has impacted other utility customers in several states. The scam claims that President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to customers’ utility bills. According to reports, scammers are handing out flyers, using social media and sending text messages. They have asked for personal information, including Social Security numbers and credit card information, saying the information is needed to apply payments to customers’ utility bills.

AMP’s Solar Rebate Program a Success
Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) announced today that it has become one of the first publicly owned utilities in the state to reserve all of its commercial solar rebate funding, proving that Alameda’s businesses are committed to sustainable power. A power outage in Alameda occurred at approximately 12:00 PM on Monday, February 20th, affecting approximately 350 customers. General boundaries for the outage were the 1800 and 2200 block of Central and Alameda Ave. The cause was equipment failure. All power was restored at 3:05 PM.

A power outage in Alameda occurred at aprroximately 12:50 PM on Tuesday afternoon affecting approximately 40 customers. General boundaries for the outage were the 1800 blocks of Eagle, Miniturn, Union and Lafayette. The cause? A Squirrel!!! It came into contact with transformer fuses. All power was restored at 2:10 PM.

This morning, January 17, 2012, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) determined that repairs need to be made immediately to a small section of our distribution system on Bay Farm Island that delivers electricity to selected homes.
