At its regular meeting on July 16, the City of Alameda Public Utilities Board (PUB) elected its officers for the 2013 fiscal year. Mr. Gregory Hamm, Ph.D., P.E., was re-elected as president and Ms. Madeline Deaton was elected as vice president. The Board also elected Mr. Girish Balachandran, General Manager of the City of Alameda’s electric utility, Alameda Municipal Power, as its secretary.

There’s a book that sits on my desk titled Municipal Electric Light Plant, Alameda, California, Cash Book, 1908-1909. Every so often, I like to flip through the crisp, hand-written pages of the ledger, perusing the names of those long-ago Alamedans who visited the plant to pay their electric bills. But that book is more than century-old electric accounts. It’s a symbol of a 125-year-old community-owned electric company that is still providing power to new generations of some of those same Alameda families.

Last night the City of Alameda’s Public Utilities Board approved Alameda Municipal Power’s (AMP) $57 million budget for fiscal year 2013. The budget reflects the priorities set by the Board through its adopted strategic plan, the annual planning workshop held in January 2012, and the annual budget workshop held in April 2012. The Board also approved a transfer of $2.8 million to the City of Alameda’s General Fund.

The City of Alameda and the Alameda Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new publicly accessible Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations on the first level of the Civic Center Garage, 1420 Oak Street. Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is alerting customers to be aware of a scam that has impacted other utility customers in several states. The scam claims that President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to customers’ utility bills. According to reports, scammers are handing out flyers, using social media and sending text messages. They have asked for personal information, including Social Security numbers and credit card information, saying the information is needed to apply payments to customers’ utility bills.

A power outage in Alameda occurred at approximately 12:00 PM on Monday, February 20th, affecting approximately 350 customers. General boundaries for the outage were the 1800 and 2200 block of Central and Alameda Ave. The cause was equipment failure. All power was restored at 3:05 PM.
